As an independent insurance agency located in Schwenksville, PA, JL Davis Insurance Agency strives to educate our clients on the importance of the coverages that are required as well as the importance of coverages that may not be required but are necessary to protect your assets.
Below are a few topics that may be of help to you in deciding the best insurance program for you:
AUTOMOBILE
Tort – In PA you must choose a Tort option, Full Tort or Limited Tort. Simply put, Tort is your right to sue. Limited Tort means you are giving up your rights to sue for minor injuries in an auto accident. This option will save you roughly 15-20% in premium. Full Tort means you are not giving up any rights to sue, and you are paying full price. Please remember, if you have children, when you give up your right to sue, you have also given up your child's right to sue if they are injured. This option can be changed at any time, you are never locked in.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist – Many people think that this coverage is paying for other people who don’t buy insurance. Wrong!! This coverage is protecting you and your family if you are hit by someone who is either uninsured or underinsured, and they injure you. This coverage pays you for your injuries. Remember, your Tort option will affect your ability to collect under this coverage.
First Party Benefits – These coverages, again, protect you and your family if you are injured in an accident. These coverages include Medical, Work Loss, Accidental Death & Funeral Benefits. These coverages are inexpensive, and can make a huge impact on your way of life if you are injured and cannot work. Many disability policies exclude auto accidents, so don’t be too quick to think you don’t need this coverage. It is extremely important.
Comprehensive – This coverage takes care of your car for almost anything that happens to it, except for a collision. For example, broken glass, hitting a deer, hail, fire, theft, flood.
Rental Reimbursement – An often overlooked coverage. If you commute to work everyday, what will you do if you are in an accident and your car is in the shop for 3 weeks? Don’t forget to include this inexpensive coverage to your policy.
HOMEOWNERS
Replacement Cost – The biggest misconception in home insurance. We must insure your home for the cost to Rebuild it. This is not the market value, the appraised value, or the assessed value. It may not be the value you want on your home, but it’s the only way to protect you in the case of a fire, and isn’t that why you bought the coverage in the first place?
Sump Pump Back Up – This has become one of the most popular endorsements to a homeowners policy, and for good reason. If you have a sump pump, you should have this coverage, especially if you have a finished basement. If your sump pump backs up for any reason, it is excluded under a standard homeowners unless you add this coverage to your policy.
Jewelry, Guns, Silver, Furs, Coins – These are an brief summary of items that are limited under your homeowners policy. Each item has a limit for theft. For example, Jewelry is typically limited to $1,000 for theft. If you have any items of value, or collections of value, be sure to bring them to our attention so we can discuss the best way to cover them properly. This also pertains to Antiques as well.
Flood – This is NOT covered under a homeowners, you must purchase a separate policy. Call us and we can prepare quotes for you.
Identity Theft – A fairly new coverage designed to protect you in the case of Identity Theft. However, don’t be misled, this coverage does not refund you any money that was stolen from you or charged to your accounts. This coverage is designed to help with the expenses involved with restoring your credit, it will help with legal fees, missed work, etc.
In Home Business – For all of the Mary Kay, Arbonne, Avon salesmen/women. Caution, there are limits under a homeowners for your stock that you keep in the house, or in your car. If you have a business like this, be sure to talk to us about it.
BUSINESS
Workers Compensation – As a sole proprietor, the State of Pennsylvania now offers you coverage for Workers Compensation. Call us and we can prepare a quote for you.
As an officer of a corporation, you have the choice of being included or excluded under Workers Compensation. Please think carefully before excluding yourself.
Commercial Auto – Many contractors take the time to buy General Liability coverage, but they keep their trucks on their personal auto policy. This is not recommended, and leaves you with large gaps in your coverage. For example, Loading & Unloading – if you are unloading a truck full of tools or supplies and while you are carrying them through the house you drop a hammer and crack a marble floor, you would think that your General Liability would cover this damage…Wrong!! This coverage is found under your Commercial Auto under Loading & Unloading – if you don’t have a commercial auto, guess what….you are paying to fix that marble floor out of your pocket. And there’s more, ask us about Hired and Non-owned coverage, Drive other car coverage, etc.
Equipment – Don’t forget to insure your equipment, it is the lifeblood of your business. If your equipment is stolen, it could put you out of business. Also, if you rent equipment, you MUST call us before you rent. Unless you are properly covered, you will not be protected if your rented equipment is damaged or stolen.
Buildings – Do you store your equipment and supplies in a detached garage at your home? If you do, do you think that your homeowners is covering that garage…..Wrong!! Your homeowners policy clearly states if a structure is used in whole or in part for business, it is excluded from coverage. That building needs to be insured under your business policy, or it is not covered.
